Ceasefire efforts in Gaza

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, developments in the Middle East have recently appeared somewhat more positive, with agreements reached and attempts to establish a ceasefire. Unfortunately, the ceasefire has not been respected by both sides, and attacks continue. Shipping lines see some hope of eventually returning to the Suez route if stability improves, but current guidance suggests this is unlikely within at least the next six months. As a result, routing via Africa remains the operational norm.

Ongoing strikes in Belgium

Belgium has experienced major disruptions this week as trade unions carried out a three-day national strike. Operations in the key transshipment ports of Antwerp, Ghent and Zeebrugge have been partly halted, leaving dozens of vessels unable to enter or depart. This may lead to late-notified delays, vessel rerouting and ongoing congestion even after the strike ends.

Air Freight

Towards the end of the year, we typically see an increase in air freight volumes. This is partly driven by major e-commerce events such as Black Friday, but also by companies aiming to receive goods before the Christmas and New Year holidays. As a result, market capacity becomes more limited, prices tend to rise, and securing space on short notice may become more challenging.

Tariffs in the US

Agreement between China and the United States

China and the U.S. have now reached a trade agreement that represents a significant de-escalation after months of heightened tensions. The agreement includes a reduction of the average U.S. tariff level on Chinese goods back to around 20%. The U.S. will also postpone the introduction of planned port fees for China-linked vessels for at least one year starting November 10. In return, China will roll back several restrictions introduced earlier this year, including export controls on rare earth minerals and fees related to U.S.-linked vessels. Together, these measures are expected to create a more predictable trade environment and contribute to more stable global cargo flows in the year ahead. We will continue to monitor developments and keep you informed of any potential impact.

EU Regulatory Update

CBAM

In 2025, both the CBAM transitional registry and the permanent registry will be in use. Quarterly reporting of imported CBAM goods will continue in the transitional registry, while applications for authorised CBAM declarant status must be submitted in the permanent registry (where future annual reporting will also take place). Reporting alone is not sufficient – authorisation in the registry is required in order to apply.
If you import, or are approaching imports of, 50 tonnes of CBAM goods per calendar year, we encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible. Companies applying no later than 31 March 2026 may continue importing CBAM goods provisionally until the Naturvårdsverket issues a decision, provided the application was submitted before exceeding the 50-tonne threshold. Once approved, you will receive an email confirmation and your CBAM account number will appear in the registry. Read more on Naturvårdsverket´s website: https://www.naturvardsverket.se/cbam
