Peak season in air freight, a shorter route via Suez and new EU requirements. November is usually one of the busiest months of the year for air freight. At sea, more and more ships between Asia and Europe are once again sailing through the Suez Canal, and two EU requirements are approaching: CBAM certificates and the EU Deforestation Regulation, EUDR. Here is what you need to know right now.

Book air freight in good time before Christmas

From November until Christmas, air cargo volumes usually increase. Black Friday, Christmas ranges and deliveries that need to arrive before year-end mean that a lot of cargo is shipped at the same time, and airline capacity becomes limited, especially out of Asia. That can make it harder to get space on the flight you want.

Do you have goods that need to arrive before Christmas? Book in good time, directly in TKL Dispatch or through your contact at TKL, and we will plan your shipments together.

More ships are sailing through the Suez Canal

More and more shipping lines are moving their services between Asia and Europe back to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. On the services that have switched, transit times are about a week shorter than via the Cape of Good Hope.

The security situation in the Red Sea still guides the shipping lines’ decisions. Check with your insurer that your cover also applies to transport through the Suez Canal.

CBAM: certificates on sale from 1 February

From 1 February 2027, it will be possible to buy CBAM certificates. If you are covered by CBAM, you already need to keep track of your imports and their embedded emissions, as certificates bought during 2027 must also cover CBAM goods imported into the EU during 2026. Certificates for 2026 must be surrendered by 30 September 2027.

As a CBAM declarant, you need to make sure on an ongoing basis that there are enough certificates in your account in the CBAM Registry. At the end of each quarter, the number of certificates must correspond to at least 50 percent of the embedded emissions of the CBAM goods you have imported since the beginning of the year. During 2027, you will therefore need both to buy certificates for your 2026 imports and to maintain sufficient coverage for your ongoing imports.

EUDR applies from 30 December

On 30 December, the EU Deforestation Regulation, EUDR, starts to apply to large and medium-sized companies. From then on, the customs declaration for goods in scope must include the reference number of a due diligence statement (DDS), or the shipment may be held at customs. Micro and small companies importing products that were not covered by the EU Timber Regulation have until 30 June 2027.

More information is available from the European Commission. We are happy to go through how it affects your customs declarations.
